Davis Middle School was named for W. M. Davis. Mr. Davis was the principal of the school in College Place during the early part of the 20th century. He is one of the veterans in the field of education in this valley, having started his teaching in Walla Walla County in 1899.

He was born in Jackson County, Indiana and lived several years near Hutchinson, Kansas, where he attended the public schools. Later he attended Great Bend Normal. After teaching seven years in Nickerson and vicinity, he came to Washington in 1899. His first school in this county was Lower Mud Creek. Later he transered to Yellowhawk where he spent two years. During his tenure at College Place at least a dozen second generation pupils - children of former pupils - completed work under his supervision.
